What is seasonal work?

Seasonal work is a perfect way to earn a bit of extra cash during an expensive time of the year. However, do you understand what seasonal work is? Seasonal work is work available to people when business is busy so demands more workers. For example, work in hotel resorts during the busy summer season.  It will, therefore, often be work which is:

  • part-time
  • temporary
  • short-term

If you're a seasonal employee you tend to work a maximum of six months out of the entire year.

What seasonal jobs are available in winter?

Seasonal work is not just about summer work in hotel resorts. Seasonal workers also work during the winter. Winter seasonal jobs tend to fall between September and mid-February. Typical seasonal jobs available in winter include:

  • work with Royal Mail due to festive gifts being sent
  • courier work such as within Amazon or DHL for the same reasons
  • takeaways delivery drivers
  • retail work, such as a retail sales associate,  due to Christmas shoppers
  • hospitality jobs due to Christmas work parties and other social events
  • gift wrappers to wrap Christmas presents purchased
  • snowboard or ski instructor
  • other ski jobs such as a ski patroller or a ski lift operator
  • playing the role of Father Christmas or Santa's elf
  • pet sitter for people who go away at Christmas or for the winter
  • warehouse associate to, for example, prepare orders
  • staff at ice rinks
  • waitress or waiter as people treat themselves to eat out

Common winter work injuries

Whilst there may be many types of seasonal winter jobs to choose from, there are also many common winter work injuries. The winter season, for example, brings bad weather which can contribute towards the risk of accidents at work. Below we look at some common winter injuries.

Courier and warehouse injuries

If you carry out seasonal work as a courier or in warehouse jobs you could be prone to slip and trip during the winter season. This could be due to:

  • poor lighting in warehouses for night time deliveries
  • ice on roads when delivering
  • wet leaves on paths for on foot deliveries

It is also possible for seasonal winter workers working as courier drivers to have an injury at work in a vehicle. For example, winter ice can cause road traffic accidents.

Father Christmas and elf role play

The winter season causes leaves to fall, creating a hazard. For those seasonal workers working as a Father Christmas or an elf, slipping on wet leaves is a potential accident if working outside. This could cause, for example:

  • cuts
  • grazes
  • sprains
  • broken bones

Ice rink and snow work accidents

A typical injury for seasonal workers who work on ice rinks or other snow work, such as ski instructors are injuries from slips, trips and falls. Naturally, this is due to working in snow and ice which can cause dangerous working conditions. For example,  if there is a pile up on paths of either snow or ice.

A further possible injury for those working on ice rinks and in the snow are bruises and sprains from slipping on ice. They can also suggest from workplace injuries such as sprains and breaks.

Retail accidents

A common accident for seasonal winter work in the retail industry is slipping. For example, it can be easy to slip outside shop doors due to heavy rain. Slipping outside a shop could cause serious injuries particularly where the floor is hard such as a pavement or shopping centre floor. This could include:

How to prevent an accident at work

As seasonal workplace accidents are possible and working in winter brings danger, it is important to understand how to prevent an accident at work. Accidents at work should be prevented by your employer. They have a legal duty to ensure that accidents in the workplace do not occur. This is because the law requires them to keep you safe and healthy at work by doing all they reasonably can to ensure this.

Your employer can prevent workplace accidents by, for example:

  • providing the workplace with up-to-date health and safety files
  • carrying out regular risk assessments of all work areas
  • offering regular safety training
  • providing you with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and any other equipment to carry out your work safely

If your employer does not carry out their legal duties they are negligent.

Could I be sacked after an accident at work?

Your employer is not allowed to sack you just because you had an accident at work. They also cannot sack you because you make a compensation claim for a workplace accident after it occurs. This includes saying that they will sack you should you decide to make a workplace compensation claim. If they do, they are breaking the law.

If you are illegally sacked after you make an accident at work compensation claim, you may be able to take your employer to an employment tribunal. This is because an employment solicitor may be able to claim unfair dismissal.

Could I claim for an accident at work?

If you are unfortunate enough to suffer an accident or injury at work, you may be able to make a compensation claim. Accidents at work can occur in any industry, so this includes seasonal employees working in the winter seasons. However, workplace accidents should not happen and instead, you should feel safe at work as your employer has a legal duty to ensure this. Therefore, if you do suffer a workplace injury which was not all your fault, you may be able to make a compensation claim.
