What is Emphysema?
Emphysema is a serious type of breathing disorder. It is also a respiratory condition and a pulmonary condition. A person with this disease will be short of breath as their lung tissues have deteriorated. This means that their lungs change shape such as by enlarging and areas that support the lung get destroyed. The lungs, therefore, no longer work, as well.
Unfortunately, there is no cure for Emphysema and the condition gets worse as time goes on. It can also lead to COPD or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Emphysema can be caused by exposure to harmful dust or chemicals at work. For example:
- coal dust in mines where ventilation is inadequate
- working in the dry cleaning industry
- work where you are exposed to fine cotton
